SUMMARY:

This study analyzes the determinants of default among contracts under Brazil’s Student Financing Fund (FIES) granted after the 2018 Reform, considering socioeconomic, racial, academic, institutional, and contractual characteristics of beneficiaries. The research draws on administrative microdata from the National Fund for Education Development (FNDE) concerning active contracts in the repayment phase during the first semester of 2026. The dissertation is organized into two complementary empirical studies and employs descriptive statistics, association tests, and multivariate binary logistic regression models. The first study examines the relationship between default, race/color, and enrollment in the Unified Registry for Social Programs (CadÚnico). Results indicate that race/color remains statistically associated with default after controlling for socioeconomic, regional, and contractual factors: compared with Asian students, Black, Indigenous, and mixed-race students showed higher odds of default, while White students showed lower odds. CadÚnico enrollment, however, lost statistical significance in the adjusted model. The second study investigates undergraduate programs and institutional characteristics. Undergraduate program remained significantly associated with default after controlling for institutional, contractual, socioeconomic, and demographic characteristics, whereas institutional effects were more limited and ENADE scores showed no independent statistical association in the final model. Overall, the findings indicate that FIES default is a multidimensional phenomenon shaped by interacting individual, financial, academic, and institutional factors. The study contributes empirical evidence on the post-2018 FIES framework and supports risk-monitoring strategies and evidence-based management aimed at reconciling financial sustainability with equity in access to higher education. It also underscores the importance of updating risk models using administrative data for prevention.
