SUMMARY:

“This research investigates the Choosing Wisely (CW) campaign within the oncology field, focusing on its international expansion and the level of awareness and agreement among Brazilian cancer care physicians. Structured in two complementary phases, the study begins with a comprehensive scoping review of oncology-related CW recommendations published from 2012 to 2024. The review identified 220 recommendations across 19 peer-reviewed studies and 20 institutional sources from various countries. These findings highlight a global trend toward more patient-centered, evidence-based oncology care, emphasizing the importance of tailoring screening, staging, and treatment strategies based on individual clinical factors such as life expectancy and biomarker profiles. The review also underscores the need for resource-stratified guidelines to support the implementation of CW principles in low- and middle-income countries, where healthcare infrastructure and access to technology may be limited. The second phase consists of a cross-sectional survey designed to assess Brazilian oncologists’ knowledge, agreement, and perceived barriers regarding the CW Oncology Brazil campaign. Using snowball sampling and an electronic questionnaire, the study captures responses from professionals in both public and private healthcare sectors. The goal is to evaluate the degree of dissemination and acceptance of CW recommendations and to identify obstacles to their practical application. The expected outcomes aim to inform strategies that enhance the adoption of high-value, evidence-informed practices in oncology, discourage unnecessary interventions, and support the efficient use of healthcare resources. Ultimately, this research contributes to the development of public policies and educational initiatives that promote ethical, sustainable, and scientifically grounded cancer care in Brazil and beyond.”
