SUMMARY:

In Brazil, the building sector (residential, public, and commercial) accounts for about 50% of electricity consumption. Within this sector, university buildings, according to the literature, have significant energy consumption due to their complex infrastructures and the variety of activities taking place inside. This high consumption is directly related to the use of HVAC systems, lighting, and equipment to meet the specific thermal and visual comfort needs of users. Given this context, the energy efficiency of buildings becomes a central issue, especially as the concept of sustainability gains relevance and there is an increasing demand for solutions that reduce the environmental impact of buildings. In recent years, several studies have been developed with the goal of creating Zero Energy Buildings (ZEBs), designed to produce the same amount of energy they consume over a year through renewable energy sources, such as solar. However, many of these studies focus on isolated analyses and/or new buildings, without considering a broader approach that explores the synergies between different existing buildings and the optimization possibilities that arise when buildings operate together. This work aims to investigate the feasibility of transforming university buildings into ZEBs, focusing on the Darcy Ribeiro Campus at the University of Brasília. The evaluation of the thermo-energy performance of these buildings included studying the main end uses of energy, as well as a detailed analysis of thermal comfort and natural lighting quality within the interiors. Besides assessing the current performance of the buildings, the research also focused on identifying the potential for energy savings through the implementation of passive and active strategies, considering Brasília’s climate. The investigation was conducted using computational simulations with specialized software such as DesignBuilder, Rhinoceros, and ClimateStudio. These programs allowed the creation of detailed building models, enabling an analysis of their energy performance and their thermal and lighting comfort conditions throughout the year. The simulations also allowed for an evaluation of the solar photovoltaic generation potential in the buildings studied. The research results indicated significant potential for improving the buildings’ energy performance through passive strategies, especially in terms of optimizing natural lighting. Additionally, the integration of photovoltaic modules proved to be a viable solution for meeting energy demand, achieving the zero-energy balance goal. The study concluded that with the application of appropriate strategies, such as proper shading, reducing the solar heat gain coefficient of glass with films, applying cool materials to the roof, and implementing a lighting control system, it is possible to transform university buildings into ZEBs, contributing to reduced energy consumption and improved thermal comfort conditions. For all analyzed buildings, it was possible to improve environmental quality, ensuring thermal comfort for at least 80% of occupied hours throughout the year, as well as reducing energy demand by an average of 15.60%, demonstrating the effectiveness of the strategies used.
