SUMMARY:

Brasilia's Pilot Plan (PPB) was the first modern site to be recognized as a World Heritage Site by Unesco in 1987. Although it is considered a heritage city, its controversial national listing only protects a few specific monumental buildings and the scales that make up the Brazilian capital. Thus, the residential blocks of the superblocks, fundamental modern examples for the architectural and urban composition of the new city, have no specific safeguarding mechanism and have been the target of several significant alterations that compromise their authenticity and the values attributed to them. Given this scenario, the general aim of this work is to identify the challenges and possibilities for preserving these examples. In order to achieve this, in addition to systematizing references on the history of modern architecture and urbanism, as well as the challenges in the field of preserving this production, archival research and the cataloguing of photographs from the Novacap Fund of the Public Archive of the Federal District are carried out. The safeguarding legislation that affects the Conjunto Urbanístico de Brasília (CUB) is also analyzed and field studies are carried out on the current panorama. Finally, the paper presents general recommendations for the maintenance and conservation of residential blocks based on a critical and ethical approach.
