SUMMARY:

The construction industry is recognized worldwide as a major driver of energy consumption and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. This requires rethinking architectural design and building strategies to meet human comfort conditions. Evidence gathered through scientific research shows that, with appropriate passive strategies, it is possible to improve the environmental performance of existing buildings and significantly reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. In this sense, the energy requalification of existing buildings is crucial to achieving global climate goals. This study adopts a method to analyze the environmental impacts of an architectural renovation focused on energy efficiency, from which a comprehensive strategy for optimizing building performance was proposed that involves the analysis of its characteristics, its operating systems, user behavior and environmental conditions. The objective of this work is to identify the best passive strategies to reduce energy consumption and carbon emissions, with lower investment, while maintaining thermal comfort during the operational phase of a public building in the city of Goiânia. The research is based on consumption data from the operational phase of the building, to simulate the study model and, subsequently, Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) to estimate the embodied and operational carbon in the proposed strategies. In the computer simulation, the aim was to improve energy consumption through strategies to change the building envelope and adopt and improve renewable energy sources. The energy audit of the building was performed and compared to the estimate of the new situations. The life cycle analysis (LCA) was considered to estimate the embodied carbon emissions and the current operational phase of the building, with concrete being the largest emitter, with more than 4 million kgCO2eq per year of the case study building, based on the construction budget. Using the computer simulation tools, it is possible to reduce the use of electrical energy in the building by 51.30% compared to current consumption with passive strategies, changing the composition of the envelope, improving and expanding the use of photovoltaic solar energy in the building and changing the building's operating hours. The average electricity consumption indicator, in kWh, was 105 kWh/m2/year. Adopting the best scenarios of the study, the operational carbon related to the use of electricity in the building increases from 67.97% to 51.47%, generating savings of approximately 23 million KgCO2eq of greenhouse gas emissions in 50 years.
