SUMMARY:

This study examines the socio-spatial segregation in Metropolitan São Paulo and Metropolitan Istanbul through the perspective of social competition, cooperation, territoriality and centrality phenomena and their mutual relationships with urban configuration. For this purpose, an integrated analytical framework combining statistical data analysis, geographic tools, machine learning algorithms and space syntax methodologies are utilized. In the first stage, various demographic and socio-economic indicators at the municipality scale are used to derive general profiles of the cases through Summary Statistics. Then, these profiles are detailed by determining the areas where demographic groups are concentrated with Location Quotient Analyses. After picturing the demographic structures, the social identity features and urban resources affecting group differentiation are determined by Random Forest Analysis. Additionally, the settlement patterns of these groups are visualized by overlapping the group data with the geographic information system files. Finally, Space Syntax measures such as network segment data and Normalized Angular Integration (NAIN) of the group areas are used to evaluate the mutual relationships between social groups and urban configurational features. Thus, the research aims to identify distinct social groups that settle in these metropolitan areas and compare the socio-spatial dynamics manifesting in segregation patterns.
