SUMMARY:

The dissertation analyzes the correlation between the narratives presented in the newspapers Correio Braziliense and Zero Hora, and the Cine Brasília and the Auditório Araújo Vianna as heritage assets—both listed examples of modern architecture located in Brasília and Porto Alegre, respectively. The aim is to uncover, behind the possible correlations identified, how these newspapers (in)form the general public about preservation practices in both cities, considering that the social construction of cultural heritage heavily depends on popular participation. To this end, the work is divided into three parts: the first discusses the specificities of modern architecture preservation and presents the Cine and the Auditório, seeking to understand the history of their design, interventions, and heritage listing processes. The second part establishes the analytical framework for the newspapers based on the concepts of Cultural History and Representation, as proposed by Sandra Pesavento, in order to define the method of reading and interpreting Correio Braziliense and Zero Hora—sources that are also considered within their historical contexts. The third part outlines the methodology and provides an analysis of the newspaper reports themselves. Finally, the study discusses the interplay between the preservation practices applied to the buildings and the way they were represented in the newspapers, aiming to understand how the narratives of these media outlets (in)form their audiences about the conservation of the aforementioned modern architectural landmarks.
