SUMMARY:

This thesis presents the documentary and material collections of the Itamaraty Palace in Brasilia, the headquarters of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and examines the tension between the use and preservation of these collections. Starting from the assumption that much of the modern and historical furniture continues to be used in everyday life, it is proposed to understand the palace as a hybrid space in which architecture, design and documentation are articulated in an integrated way. Based on the trinomial archive-museum-place of representation, the research analyzes how this articulation can strengthen the preservation and valorization of the institutional heritage. The study is organized around three main axes: the formation of the documentary collection (with an emphasis on architectural and design records), the constitution of the material collection (furniture on display or in use), and the contemporary challenges of conservation in institutional contexts. The analysis takes into account the different values attributed to documents and objects - documentary, evidential, artistic, heritage, symbolic, among others - based on authors such as Schellenberg, Bellotto, Riegl and Susan Macdonald. The methodology used is qualitative, combining documentary research, photographic surveys and a critical review of the specialized bibliography. The conclusion is that the formulation of specific guidelines for the collections in use and the integration of the architectural, museological and archival dimensions are fundamental to guarantee the integrity and continuity of Itamaraty's material and symbolic heritage.
