SUMMARY:

This research aims to investigate the manifestation of the Neocolonial movement within the ecclesiastical sphere and the impact of Neocolonial architectural language on the construction of religious buildings during the first half of the 20th century, analyzing the formal and iconographic aspects characteristic of churches built in this style. The first half of the 20th century in Brazil was a period of reorganization in the relationships between Church, State, and civil society, following the Proclamation of the Republic, which was influenced by Enlightenment and positivist ideals. The intense process of European immigration and the resulting cultural environment fostered the emergence of nationalist movements, among which the Neocolonial movement stood out, retrieving Iberian roots as a counterpoint to international historicist architectural styles. The support of influential Church authorities in Brazil for the Neocolonial style, particularly between the 1920s and 1940s, represented an effort to promote ultramontane thought, combined with a nationalist vision that placed Catholicism at the center of the formation of Brazil’s cultural and historical identity. In recent years, there has been a growing interest in the study of Neocolonialism through the lens of religious architecture, particularly churches designed and built according to this stylistic language. However, the lack of comprehensive research aimed at identifying existing examples, as well as the limited number of formal analyses of churches constructed in this style, reveals the need for further studies that contribute to a better understanding of their main characteristics and to the appreciation of Neocolonial religious buildings. This research is therefore structured in two parts: the first consists of an investigation into the context and conditions that allowed for—and even encouraged —the spread of Neocolonial ideas within the Brazilian Catholic ecclesiastical milieu. The second consists of an analysis of four churches built in the Neocolonial style: Church of Nossa Senhora do Brasil and Basilica of Nossa Senhora do Carmo, in São Paulo; Church of Nossa Senhora da Lampadosa in Rio de Janeiro; and Church of Santa Teresa in Belo Horizonte. The analysis will focus on their formal and tectonic aspects; materials and construction techniques; and the function and symbolic meaning of architectural elements.
