SUMMARY:

During the Brazilian military dictatorship (1964-1985), numerous government plans, programs, and actions were formulated with the aim of developing and integrating the Amazon region, promoting territorial occupation processes through targeted migration and encouraging urbanization processes in the Legal Amazon. In this context, this study aims to capture this territorial appropriation through the various state mechanisms implemented that enabled, among countless other results, the creation of the Humboldt Scientific City, in northern Mato Grosso, during the 1970s, within the scope of the National Development Plans (PNDs). Influenced by developmentalist and ecological paradigms, the state project, by bringing together scientists in the middle of the forest, reflected both the global context of the militarization of science and the emergence of environmental concerns. Under these conditions, the urban utopia faced operational and practical challenges, leading to its early abandonment, culminating in its emptying and disappearance. Based on historical research using primary and oral sources, bibliographic and iconographic references, this work seeks to reveal how Humboldt's Scientific City expresses the tensions between developmentalist ideas and environmental preservation, as well as the conflicts between economic growth, territorial occupation, and conservation of the Amazon biome. By revisiting this experience in the forest, the research contributes to the debate on the limits and contradictions of state developmentalist policies for the Amazon, whose effects and dilemmas remain present today.
