SUMMARY:

A patchwork quilt, in the most literal sense, is defined as the union of several pieces of fabric with different textures and patterns to create a single element. The urban fabric of Palmas city, capital of the state of Tocantins, can thus be classified, metaphorically, due to the different urban layouts that make up its residential blocks. Here, the stitches that connect each fragment of the composition are the collector roads that make up the city's macro road network, designed to be so since the original Master Plan of 1989. This same Plan was responsible for giving design freedom to the urban planning of those block interiors. In addition to the difference in the urban form of the blocks, there were also disparities in their occupation processes: many of the blocks closest to the center were occupied through plot sales, with the aim of meeting real estate capital demands; at the same time, irregular settlements emerged in areas of expansion and environmental preservation, which led the government to promote urban regularization and housing improvement actions. Under the justification of contributing to urban studies that address the relationship between space and society, the research conducts a comparative study of the urban configuration and appropriation of public spaces between residential blocks in Palmas that emerged from the sale of plots or popular housing promotion actions. To this end, spatial syntax techniques will be used, which investigate, among other variables, the connectivity and integration of the urban system. Environmental psychology techniques will also be applied to survey public life, based on people counting and the creation of behavioral maps in the public spaces of the blocks chosen for the case study. This will allow us to verify aspects of the spatial syntaxes and semantics of the blocks that may be more or less suitable for maintaining urbanity in public spaces, i.e., the co-presence of diverse subjects performing diverse activities.
