SUMMARY:

The residential blocks of Brasília’s superquadras, in their various forms, are a characteristic building typology of the heritage city. Many of them reflect the period of architectural research and production that marked the construction of the capital; though, they don’t have legal protection. The need for updates, combined with the undervalue of aging modernist architecture results in successive interventions on these buildings, which often lose defining features of their original designs. Faced, however with so many buildings of the same category, how can one understand the numerous interventions carried out on these blocks, case by case? From here, the focus shifts to R2, a partnership between architect Milton Ramos and the Rabello construction company. In 1970, this project has been materialized in 38 replicas of the same prefabricated building. The large number of these superquadra blocks allows for an analysis of the different forms of intervention they have gone through and their motivations, which sometimes coincide. This situation serves as a starting point for reflecting on the preservation of replicated buildings, through the concepts of value, time and aura brought by Alois Riegl, Cesare Brandi and Walter Benjamin, respectively. Then, based on photographic and documentary surveys and case studies, this research reflects upon possible preservation solutions for the blocks of the Plano Piloto in the face of increasing interventions.
