SUMMARY:

The construction sector is among the main contributors to greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, due to both the embodied carbon in materials and the energy consumption during building operation. In this context, low-carbon strategies become essential for the decarbonization of the sector, with particular emphasis on Photovoltaic Shading Devices (PVSD), which integrate active electricity generation with the passive function of solar protection. Using the LabZero – UnB demonstration building as a case study, this research investigates the contribution of PVSDs to the mitigation of carbon emissions over the building life cycle, considering the stages A1–A3, A4, A5, B4, B6, and C1–C4. The methodology is based on a simplified Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), following international standards, using the LCA Tool + EPDs (IEA EBC Annex 90 / SHC Task 70). The analysis was structured through material quantification and the estimation of embodied emissions, combined with thermo-energy simulations in DesignBuilder, allowing the evaluation of the impact of shading on building performance. Three analysis scenarios were defined: (1) building without solar protection; (2) building with a PVSD system; and (3) building with conventional shading. Additionally, a carbon balance was performed, considering the relationship between embodied emissions, operational emissions, and emissions avoided through on-site photovoltaic generation. Energy performance indicators, such as Energy Payback Time (EPBT) and Energy Return Factor (ERF), were also used to complement the analysis. The results indicate that shading strategies significantly contribute to the reduction of internal thermal loads. From an LCA perspective, although photovoltaic systems increase the building’s embodied emissions, their contribution during the operational phase promotes the reduction of life cycle emissions through energy generation. Furthermore, the scenario without solar protection presents higher operational emissions in absolute terms, while the PVSD scenario demonstrates the best overall performance when analyzed from a life cycle perspective. In energy terms, the PVSD system presents a payback time of less than one year and a high energy return factor, highlighting its efficiency over the building’s lifetime.
