SUMMARY:

This research is part of the Landscape, Project and Planning research line of the Postgraduate Program in Architecture and Urbanism at the University of Brasília. It investigates the contributions of quilombola territories to the field of urbanism and territorial planning based on the analysis of socio-ecological practices observed in comparative case studies, called the Quilombola Mosaic. The thesis starts from a critique of the urban-hegemonic tradition of moderncolonial territorial planning, historically centered on urban space and omitting black territorialities and all territorialities considered rural. The work understands contemporary quilombos as collective subjects of rights and forms of Afro-diasporic spatial permanence, conceived as fragments/parts that make up a larger picture, in which the thesis constructs a Quilombola Mosaic, whose pieces are organized from different areas of knowledge such as urbanism and geography, with the support of anthropology, sociology and history, and at different scales that make up the field of territorial planning. The term quilombo historically traverses the timeline of Brazilian territorial formation and constitutes itself as historical-territorial resistance from the subversion of the slave-owning concept as a symbol of freedom and autonomy and contemporarily as a category endowed with collective rights linked to African ancestry. The theoretical framework articulates the debates on quilombo, territory, decolonial ecology and the production of space, engaging with authors such as Rafael Sanzio dos Anjos, Rogério Haesbaert, Henri Lefebvre, Ana Fani Carlos, Nego Bispo, Malcolm Ferdinand and Aníbal Quijano. The research considers quilombola territories as socially produced spaces, organized from collective practices, ancestry, territorial management and socio-ecological relations linked to community permanence and environmental protection. Methodologically, the research adopts a qualitative-analytical approach, structured in multi-scalar analysis. At the regional level, cartographic databases, georeferenced data, and environmental and territorial legislation related to Brazilian quilombola territories and their socio-ecological contexts will be analyzed. At the local level, comparative case studies will be developed in three to five Brazilian quilombola territories — Quilombo Ilha de Maré (BA), Quilombo Kalunga (GO), and Quilombo Ivaporunduva (SP) — in addition to international collaboration with the Councils of Black Communities in Colombia. Based on the research results, spatial markers and socio-ecological practices grounded in Afro-Brazilian values (Trindade, 2005) will be systematized, capable of contributing to critical reflections and proposals aimed at territorial planning, considering Brazilian, and to some extent Latin American, multiculturalism, and how these practices can critically challenge contemporary urban and territorial planning instruments.
