SUMMARY:

This thesis investigates walkability in the central area of Brasília, Federal District, especially in the surroundings of the Plano Piloto Bus Terminal, understanding it as a relational socio-spatial condition rather than an exclusively physical attribute of the built environment. It is based on the premise that walking depends on the articulation between spatial structure, the material quality of routes, travel time, access to urban opportunities, and the capitals mobilized by subjects. The research articulates Space Syntax Theory (SST), Place Syntax, and Bourdieu’s theory of capitals, expanded through the debates on Spatial Capital proposed by Marcus and Spatial Capital of Flows (CAflu) proposed by Holanda. Methodologically, it adopts a mixed-methods approach, consisting of configurational modeling of the pedestrian network, using NAIN and NACH; accessibility modeling, using Reach and Attraction Reach; morphological assessment through iCam 2.0; a structured questionnaire, with 242 valid responses; and systematic multilevel pedestrian counts around the Bus Terminal. The results show that a favorable configurational position does not guarantee good material walkability, nor does it, in isolation, explain the observed flows, especially due to the strength of the Bus Terminal as an exceptional metropolitan attractor. The socio-spatial inequality of pedestrians is predominantly organized as cumulative reinforcement: network position, travel time, socioeconomic condition, and access to opportunities tend to overlap. In this context, the Brasilia contradiction of urban mobility appears as an analytically relevant exception, rather than as a dominant rule. As an analytical synthesis, the thesis proposes the Pedestrian Socio-spatial (Dis)advantage Index (IDSP), which ranks the Administrative Regions of the Federal District according to degrees of socio-spatial advantage and disadvantage. The thesis concludes that the potential structured by urban form is not automatically converted into the effective appropriation of routes: space may be common, but its appropriation remains unequal.
