SUMMARY:

Based on the need to broaden the understanding of urban spaces in the Brazilian Amazon, especially regarding their spatiality, this research seeks to contribute to the field from a morphological perspective. To this end, a sample of urban structures is investigated, interpreted on two levels: a) a global one, in which 100 municipalities are compared with settlements from all regions of the country, and b) a local level, in which only cities located in the Northern Region are analyzed comparatively, aiming to discuss their forms of internal articulation and to understand the ways in which the historical and socioeconomic processes that occurred in the different parts of the Amazon relate to their spatial structure. To this end, two categories of variables are explored: a) the configurational, of a geometric and topological nature, structured according to the theoretical-methodological support of Space Syntax (Theory of the Social Logic of Space); b) the non-configurational, composed of socioeconomic measures, including aspects such as income, education, levels of social inequality, among others. The aim of this study is to contribute to the characterization and identification of possible configurational patterns specific to cities in the region, in dialogue with social dynamics, and to provide support for urban interventions in these spaces. There are two research questions to be answered: 1) Are there configurational patterns specific to Amazonian cities in the Brazilian scenario? 2) Is there an association between the socioeconomic profile of the resident population and the levels of configurational accessibility in these cities?
