SUMMARY:

This work addresses the practice of extension activities in Technical Assistance for Social Housing (ATHIS) in the training and professional practice of civil engineers. In a scenario marked by the precariousness of social housing, the weaknesses of public housing policies, and the limited involvement of civil construction professionals in this field, the research aims to analyze how this practice can contribute to the professional training of civil engineers, promoting the development of technical skills and strengthening their social integration. For contextualization purposes, the evolution of the curricular guidelines of Civil Engineering and university extension (EU) is investigated, seeking to understand its role as a formative instrument and a means of bridging the gap between engineering education and social demands. In the context of the Federal District (DF), extension activities linked to Civil Engineering courses are examined, analyzing their effective integration into academic training and the approaches adopted, especially regarding the connection with ATHIS demands. From a historical and legal perspective, this study analyzes the transformations in social housing policies in Brazil and the consolidation of the right to adequate housing in the Federal Constitution, elements that underpin the work in social housing technical assistance. The research adopts as a case study the Extension Project "Technical Assistance for Social Housing" (ATHOS), analyzing the housing improvement actions developed in 2024 in the municipality of Sobradinho/DF, using the participant observation method. This analysis focuses on housing performance based on the benchmarks of housing unit safety, habitability, user satisfaction, and constructive sustainability. It concludes that the participation of engineering students in university extension activities, particularly those focused on social housing technical assistance, reveals significant formative potential, enabling the integration of technical knowledge and social demands, expanding fields of action and strengthening the social role of the civil engineer.
