SUMMARY:

This dissertation investigates the protection of exposed concrete surfaces, focusing on the formulation of technical guidelines and parameters for interventions in Modern Architecture buildings. In these buildings, exposed concrete simultaneously constitutes the constructive solution and the architectural expression, requiring conservation strategies to reconcile technical efficacy with respect for the cultural significance of the asset. The general objective is to support interventions through the evaluation of concrete properties and the performance of surface protection systems, especially on surfaces subjected to degradation processes exposed to environmental conditions, based on the definition of technical-scientific parameters and guidelines for conservative interventions on exposed concrete surfaces. The theoretical framework articulates the role of concrete as a material language, contemporary principles of heritage conservation, and durability aspects, contemplating deterioration mechanisms and recurring pathological manifestations. The methodology adopts an experimental approach applied to the modern heritage of the University of Brasília (UnB), using the University Restaurant (RU/UnB) as a case study. The experimental program involves in loco and laboratory tests to analyze the transport mechanisms of liquid water and water vapor in concrete core samples. Simultaneously, the comparative performance between a silane-siloxane-based water repellent system and an acrylic varnish is evaluated, verifying their effects on capillary absorption and vapor diffusion. The results indicate that protection should be guided by precise diagnostics and physical-chemical compatibility criteria, avoiding solutions that alter appearance or compromise the hygrothermal functioning of the facade. Finally, the study consolidates technical guidelines to support decision-making, contributing to maintenance and conservation practices consistent with the requirements of modern heritage in exposed concrete.
