SUMMARY:

This doctoral thesis research aims to analyze urban mobility from the perspective of women's gender, in the post-pandemic process of COVID-19. In order to measure and highlight the impact of the pandemic crisis on the lives of Latin American women from underprivileged backgrounds, the research focuses on urban mobility in the capital cities of Mexico (Mexico City), Brazil (Brasilia) and Argentina (Buenos Aires), which share social and economic similarities. In this way, the research is divided into three parts: 1) Understanding gender as an analytical category and its social aspects; 2) Analyzing the city from a gender perspective; 3) Analyzing urban mobility in the three capital cities with general data on planning actions aimed at improving their mobility. This doctoral research was motivated by the emergence of the coronavirus pandemic and the need for a discussion on the inequality of the social, economic and urban system accentuated during social isolation. In addition, urban management in Latin American capitals is criticized in terms of containing the coronavirus and mitigating the social impacts of the pandemic, considering gender inequality and the overlapping of social roles for women. Thus, in a space-time frame of 2019, 2020 and 2022, the research revisits the nexus between the Latin American city, urban mobility, and women's social and economic inequalities. The pandemic has highlighted the vulnerabilities of the urban and social environment, exposing the need for social change and a reconfiguration of urban policies.
