SUMMARY:

This work aims to understand the formation of the insurgent cultural territory of Mercado Sul in Taguatinga, DF (Federal District, Brazil). By analyzing the territory through three generations of artists and cultural producers between 1970 and 2025, the research adopts a transdisciplinary approach, employing the detour method (método-desvio)—a means through which diverse methods of reading and analyzing reality are applied. These include dialectical historical materialism, urban ethnography, action research, documentary sources, oral history research, orality, photographic archives, and thorough bibliographic review, as well as semi-structured interviews. The central idea is to comprehend how the cultural production of young people excluded from Brasília’s Plano Piloto and relegated to Taguatinga’s periphery has, since the 1970s, stretched the boundaries of exclusion imposed by socio-spatial segregation. Their work asserts a cultural production deeply connected to the Amefrican (Afro-diasporic) roots of the satellite cities in the Federal District. Using participant observation and semi-structured interviews, special attention was given to the dynamics of exchange and dialogue with Mercado Sul’s historical figures, whose contributions were divided into three distinct generations. The first generation, influenced by Taguatinga’s 1970s countercultural scene, founded artistic groups such as Grupo Retalhos and Mamulengo Presepada, challenging issues of class and race. The second generation, emerging in the early 2000s, became the intellectual heirs of these pioneers. Their avant-garde activities reinvented everyday life at Mercado Sul by blending cultural hubs, art, popular culture, political activism, and hacker culture—culminating in the 2015 occupation movement—while intersecting race, class, and gender. Finally, the study explores the artistic and cultural agendas of the third generation, raised within Mercado Sul itself. Their work is deeply intersectional, engaging with LGBTQIAP+ issues, decoloniality, and Indigenous reclamation. The research seeks to construct a narrative process that embraces diverse methodological approaches within the scale of culture, developed sympoietically (in collaborative creation) with Mercado Sul’s past and present residents and artists. Between inter- and trans-scalar dynamics, they prioritize a cultural beyond-intrascale (intraescalaridade cultural além) that destabilizes archival certainties and historical assumptions about the city through popular memories, grassroots archives, and photographs of everyday life.
