SUMMARY:

Since their precursors Nina Rodrigues (1896), Arthur Ramos (1934), Edison Carneiro (1948) and Roger Bastide (1961), Afro-Brazilian studies have entered terreiros of candomblé and described their ritualistic, parental, socio-spatial and archetypal dynamics. However, these canonical studies concentrated their research on terreiros of Nagô origin. In an attempt to break through this academic barrier, diversify the fields of study on this subject and broaden our understanding of the dimension of being/belonging to these terreiro spaces, which are defined by the complex relationship established between ancestry, the body and the space they occupy, this work brings a new guise to the term terreiro of candomblé, brought to this research through the concept of Terreitório of candomblé. To do this, I sew together relational reflections between Social Anthropology, History and Cultural Geography. Using qualitative research methodology (Minayo, 2001), I try to measure a reality that is not quantified (Peirano, 2008), but which can be perceived through values, meanings, beliefs, belonging and other variables. In view of this, this research seeks to broaden the architectural understanding of these territories, to illustrate the complexity (tangible and intangible) that materialises and builds this whole ensemble. To analyse the parts in order to understand the whole (Lévi-Strauss, 1958), and thus elucidate its authenticity (Menezes, 1984). This authenticity, based on the rhizomatic complexity that will be described in this study, is still understood by heritage protection policies in a separatist, dichotomous and dual manner (material/immaterial, tangible/intangible, immovable/movable, etc.). In order to extend this understanding, this research also delves into the history of the construction of the notion and ideology of Brazilian cultural heritage, going through the way in which the structuring of these safeguard policies went hand in hand, and sometimes still goes hand in hand, with the nationalist ideology and cultural purity.
