SUMMARY:

Urban infrastructures constitute fundamental systems for the organization and functioning of contemporary metropolitan territories. However, their interpretation has traditionally emphasized technical and operational aspects, often overlooking the landscapes produced by their implementation and by the relationships they establish with the territory. Based on this premise, this research investigates the infrastructural landscapes of Metropolitan Brasília, focusing on the Southwest Axis of the Federal District. Its main objective is to understand how railways, power transmission lines, and the metro system produce specific landscapes, and how these landscapes can be interpreted through a multiscalar reading of the territory. As its main theoretical and methodological contribution, the dissertation proposes the concept of infrastructural landscape as an analytical category for understanding the relationships between infrastructure, landscape, and territory. To achieve this, it develops a reading method based on the articulation between surface and thickness, integrating cartographic analysis, aerial imagery, cross-sections, field observations, and analytical redrawings. The application of this method enabled the identification of six landscape typologies—cut landscape, embankment landscape, easement landscape, station landscape, trail landscape, and in-between landscape—as well as the interpretation of three representative infrastructural urban nodes within Metropolitan Brasília: the Landscape Coordinate, the Crossroads, and the Horizon of Expansion. The findings demonstrate that infrastructures extend beyond their technical functions and actively shape the landscape by transforming topography, organizing open spaces, inducing urban occupation, structuring flows, and producing distinct spatial experiences. The research further demonstrates that understanding these landscapes requires a multiscalar reading capable of articulating different forms of territorial representation and observation, revealing relationships that remain difficult to perceive when infrastructures are analyzed as isolated technical objects. By shifting the focus from individual infrastructures to the relationships that connect lines, meshes, and nodes, this dissertation proposes a new way of reading Metropolitan Brasília, contributing to contemporary debates on infrastructure, landscape, and urbanization.
