SUMMARY:

By rotating the north orientation of the plan submitted to the 1957 competition for the Pilot Plan of Brasília, Lucio Costa reorients the aerial reading of a territory that had been systematically studied since the previous century. In doing so, the two lines intersecting within the concavity of Lake Paranoá give rise to a powerful image that continues to shape debates about Brasília to this day, while simultaneously abstracting the constructive and structural complexity that made such a synthesis possible. This research is based on the hypothesis that Brasília must be discussed free from the systematic representations that have historically guided its criticism, as if its meaning had been predetermined even before its inauguration. To this end, the study turns to sectional representations, making it possible to develop a new perspective beyond the image of the cross seen in plan. Through sections—vertical cuts through the object—it becomes possible to observe the ground as a central protagonist in Costa’s design. Endowed with a three-dimensional thickness, the topographic configuration was decisive to the project’s conception, particularly through the alignment of the Pilot Plan’s axis of symmetry with the topographic ridge of the territory. Methodologically, the research redraws, in section, the areas that concentrated the greatest earthworks during the construction of the city, divided into three acts: Plataforma Rodoviária, Esplanada dos Ministérios e Praça dos Três Poderes. The comparison of sections, photographs, and critical literature in each act reveals the efforts undertaken to preserve the monumental landscape—subtle when viewed from above, yet evident when experienced from the ground.
