SUMMARY:

This dissertation addresses the importance of architecture and urbanism collections as fundamental elements for the preservation of cultural memory and for understanding the creative, technical, political, and social processes involved in architectural production. Focusing on the archives of the Instituto de Arquitetos do Brasil (IAB), guarded in Brasília, the work explores the challenges and urgencies related to the preservation and access to this kind of documentation, emphasizing their relevance both for the profession and for society. Based on this collection, the analysis traces the history of the IAB and its DF Department, highlighting preservation initiatives such as archival treatment actions and efforts for the dissemination of the collection. The research also underscores the threats and challenges to the preservation of architecture and urbanism archives in the country, with an emphasis on the threat of cultural heritage evasion abroad. Furthermore, it addresses the possibilities for preserving and valuing these funds as cultural heritage, proposing public policies and the application of current legislation in the field of Brazilian cultural heritage preservation for these items.
