The role of public space in the Educating City: experiences of schools in the Bacia do Rio Grande region - BA.
Educating city; social development; school; public spaces.
Education is a process that transcends the confines of school, and is essential for the formation of critical, participatory, and conscious social subjects within a democratic society. In this context, the city appears as an important educational tool, through its public spaces, which promote encounters and experiences, thus contributing to the social and cultural construction of this population and improving the quality of life of citizens. However, the simple creation of public spaces is not enough; a multidisciplinary process is necessary to produce educational public spaces, capable of restoring the protagonism, collectivity, and identity of citizens, contributing to social development. Thus, the research seeks to analyze how schools relate to public spaces within the perspective of an educational city, having as its object of study the region of the Rio Grande Basin, in Bahia. To this end, we used quantitative and qualitative approaches, integrating bibliographic and documentary reviews, through the study of concepts of public space, social formation, and educational cities, investigation and analysis of legislation external to Public Educational Policies and Cities, with a national and regional focus; and use of a cartographic method, supported by questionnaires for collecting, analyzing and mapping data from the study region. The results aim to offer reflections and guidelines that contribute to expanding knowledge about the intersection between city, education and public space, strengthening the role of cities as spaces for learning and social development.
