SUMMARY:

The doctoral research investigates, problematizes, and characterizes the cities that comprise the former Estrada de Ferro Goiás (EFG), focusing on the period from 1909, when the railway was implemented as a tool for territorial penetration in the State of Goiás, to 1957, when the line became part of the Rede Ferroviária Federal S.A. and consequently adopted a new role as a connector. It is known that railways traverse different territories, modify, and drive a series of events and actions that predominantly result in transformations, expansions, and even the creation of cities. These cities exhibit distinct urbanization patterns and spatial organization compared to those without such infrastructure. In this sense, the EFG was an instrument of modernity, established in the late 19th century, which transformed and founded cities along its route in central Brazil. The thesis allows for an understanding and analysis of the urbanization processes in the region where the tracks passed, qualifying the railway as a tool for territorial penetration. To achieve this, a narrative about this railway and its cities is constructed, starting from the historical process of its implementation, particularly based on national and regional transportation plans, to interpretations of urban centers influenced or originated by this infrastructure. As a vector of socio-spatial transformation and urbanization, the subject and its supporting elements were approached through methodological procedures based on bibliographic research, documentary investigation in printed and electronic archives of public and private institutions, on-site surveys, records, and mappings with appropriate cartographic analysis, and taxonomic appropriation for city categorization. Thus, investigating the nature of this territorial occupation process through railway infrastructure, identifying unique characteristics of the cities, clarified knowledge in this thematic field and, above all, provided the composition of a portrait, albeit provisional, of the origins and impacts of the EFG in the Midwest region of Brazil during the first half of the 20th century.
