SUMMARY:

The architect plays a crucial role in promoting access to public spaces through inclusive design. However, the physical characteristics and legal restrictions of historical and/or landmarked sites pose significant challenges. This study evaluated the spacial accessibility, focusing on movement and use components, for people with physical disabilities and reduced mobility in three buildings – the Brasília Historical Museum, the Lucio Costa Space, and the Casa de Chá – and their surrounding environment, all located in Brasília's Three Powers Square. The methodology was based on bibliographic research, fieldwork, and technical observations conducted through checklists supported by accessibility legislation and standards. Elements such as ramps, flooring, elevators, handrails, doors, level changes, and restrooms were considered. The Accessibility Index for the surroundings, calculated based on various urban indicators like sidewalk characteristics, level changes, crossings and curb ramps, urban furniture and equipment, parking, and stops, showed that the Lucio Costa Space achieved the best index at 41%. Regarding the buildings, where ramps, stairs, doors, circulation, and adapted restrooms were evaluated, the Accessibility Index was higher for the Lucio Costa Space, reaching 68% accessibility. Thus, based on the ease of access to the buildings, their immediate surroundings, and accessible routes, the Lucio Costa Space demonstrated the best performance among the three evaluated locations in the Three Powers Square. The analyzed indicators revealed the presence of well-dimensioned ramps, adequate signage, continuous routes, and an absence of significant architectural barriers. Nevertheless, the study identified the need for some adaptations to meet the requirements and accessibility criteria defined in the standards, such as better leveling of the Portuguese stone paving throughout the square.
