SUMMARY:

This research investigates the contributions of Architecture and Urban Planning to the production of habitat and housing in rural areas, a topic historically rendered invisible by public policies and marginalized within the disciplinary field. By challenging the dichotomous view between countryside and city and acknowledging the diversity of Brazilian ruralities, the study seeks to understand how architects and urban planners can broaden their scope of practice, valuing ways of life, socio-territorial forms of organization, and practices that extend beyond the urban imaginary. The study is grounded in the hypothesis that incorporating rural space into Architecture and Urban Planning education constitutes an urgent need, particularly within the context of the interiorization of undergraduate programs and the expansion of university extension policies. Within this framework, experiences of Technical Assistance for Social Housing in rural areas (Rural ATHIS), developed by research and extension groups such as GERAH (UFRN), HABIS (USP), and PERIFÉRICO (UnB), are analyzed as repertoires of a field in consolidation, marked by institutional gaps and methodological challenges. As extension practices articulated with professional training, these experiences contribute to the development of a critical, territorially grounded, and socially committed professional practice. The research also considers collective spaces for debate, such as the Habitat and Citizenship Colloquia, understood as arenas for articulation and systematization within the field. The curricularization of extension is examined as a mechanism capable of strengthening the integration between teaching, extension, and territory, provided it is supported by consistent pedagogical conditions and critical approaches that prevent its formalistic emptying. Furthermore, the study advances the hypothesis that dialogue between Rural ATHIS and consolidated practices of Rural Technical Assistance and Extension (ATER) may contribute to interdisciplinary approaches to rural habitat, incorporating methodological lessons related to long-term engagement, participatory processes, and socio technical mediation. The general objective is to analyze how consolidated experiences of Rural ATHIS can contribute to Architecture and Urban Planning education, discussing their methodological contributions within the context of program interiorization and extension curricularization. Specifically, the research aims to: (i) examine methodologies, outcomes, and the articulation between teaching, research, and extension within these experiences; (ii) discuss educational challenges and opportunities arising from interiorization and curricularization, based on the analysis of pedagogical proposals from programs such as UNILA, UFFS, and UFG; and (iii) propose a synthesized methodological framework integrating curricular arrangements, institutional structures, and interdisciplinary dialogues. The methodology adopts a qualitative, exploratory, and interpretative approach, mobilizing a literature review on rural–urban relations and housing policies, multiple case studies, document analysis, interviews, and action research in a rural community as a methodological pilot articulated with theoretical reflection. Partial findings indicate the consolidation of a shared methodological repertoire among the analyzed experiences, although shaped by distinct institutional and territorial conditions. The research seeks to contribute to strengthening the field of Rural ATHIS and to developing methodologies that integrate education, extension practices, and knowledge production, reinforcing the social relevance of Architecture and Urban Planning in contexts marked by rural–urban interdependence.
