SUMMARY:

The Fazendinha is a cluster of wooden houses located in Vila Planalto, built during the early years of Brasília’s construction, between 1957 and 1960, as part of the camps that housed workers—particularly engineers and technicians responsible for building the capital. Understood here as an expression of a “candanga dwelling,” the Fazendinha constitutes a vestige of early forms of inhabiting the city. Within this context, the study investigates the conditions that enabled the permanence of this ensemble, originally conceived as temporary, by analyzing its relationship with the so-called candanga modern architecture, its socio spatial condition within the camps, and its historical trajectory. The research articulates a historical-interpretative approach—based on documentary, iconographic, and cartographic analysis—with configurational analytical procedures derived from Space Syntax, in order to understand the spatial organization of the dwellings and their implications for ways of inhabiting. The results reveal that the persistence of the Fazendinha constitutes a paradoxical phenomenon: although conceived as a temporary wooden architecture, linked to the transient logic of the camps, the ensemble became consolidated as a permanent form of dwelling. In this way, the study contributes to a broader understanding of provisional architecture in the formation of Brasília—one that endured and became part of the city’s material heritage—while also highlighting its role as a material support for the social dynamics that shaped the camps during the city’s construction and the continued presence of their inhabitants.
