SUMMARY:

This paper addresses Brasília as part of the process of modernization and urbanization of the interior of the country, based on a discussion of the concept of a healthy city. In the historiography of the transfer of the federal capital to the Center-West, there is a recurrence of elements that encompass issues of hygiene and health, defended by the argument of bringing “progress” to the backlands, a region historically associated with disease, emptiness and an untouched nature. Studies presented by the committees that chose the site conclude that the Central Plateau had ideal and beneficial conditions for health, evidenced by the landscape of mild, dry, healthy climate and rich water potential, indicating sanitary principles that guided the urban layout and implementation of the new capital. In this sense, the aim is to understand how these ideals of health were disseminated and how they appear in Brasília in its conception, implementation and appropriation. The research is based on a bibliographic review of these concepts, according to the perspective of the circulation of ideas as a way of disseminating urban knowledge. The various modern experiments with principles of health that have been implemented in Brazil are discussed, with emphasis on the work of the Saturnino de Brito Office, due to its significant participation in the projects and administration of sanitation works in the construction of Brasília. Based on the selected sources, including historiographical texts, academic works and primary sources on Brasília, we perceive a conceptual link between narrating through landscape and the concept of a healthy city, which, although technically oriented, also mobilizes artistic, symbolic and cultural meanings. In this way, this approach allowed us to understand the contradictions existing in the conception, implementation and appropriation of Brasília in the discourses and projects, expressed in an ideal of a healthy, salubrious and sanitized urban space.
