SUMMARY:

This study aimed to evaluate the physicochemical and microbiological quality of clear condensate water generated by an air-conditioning system installed in a building at the University of Brasília, as well as to assess its potential for non-potable uses and propose treatment measures compatible with the quality standards established by current regulations. The study adopted an experimental and descriptive approach, with samples collected from condensate generated by an air-conditioning unit installed in the CEDIARTE Library, conveyed through the building’s piping system, and stored in a 200-L tank located in the building’s basement. Measurements of pH, temperature, electrical conductivity, and total dissolved solids were performed, in addition to microbiological analyses of heterotrophic bacteria, viable fungi, and Escherichia coli. The data were organized and subjected to descriptive statistical analysis and exploratory correlation analysis using Spearman’s correlation coefficient. The results showed low values of electrical conductivity and total dissolved solids, with maximum values of 181.90 µS/cm and 121.87 mg/L, respectively, remaining below the reference values established for non-potable uses. pH showed greater variability, with values below 6.0 recorded in some samples. Escherichia coli was not detected in the analyzed samples, whereas heterotrophic bacteria and viable fungi were quantified in some samples, demonstrating the need for microbiological quality control. The analysis of the results, together with the scientific literature and regulatory requirements, supported the proposal of a treatment configuration comprising pH control, disinfection, and filtration for the retention of particles and impurities. The inclusion of viable fungi analysis is also noteworthy, as this parameter was scarcely addressed in the studies identified in the literature review concerning the microbiological quality of condensate from air-conditioning systems. It was concluded that clear condensate water showed potential for use in non-potable applications in buildings, provided that water quality is monitored and treatment measures compatible with the intended use are adopted. However, the results were not sufficient to demonstrate its suitability for human consumption, for which further characterization and specific treatment would be required.
