SUMMARY:

This research assumes that it is possible to learn from and about the city from childhood and from the territory itself, having the school space as a space for experimentation and dialogue between city and childhood. Corroborating the idea that “it is from childhood that a city is built for everyone” (TONUCCI, 2016), it is believed that by including children in the process of apprehension and construction of cities, it is possible to combat “urban illiteracy” (MARICATO, 2002) and to foster the struggle for the “Right to the City” (LEFEBVRE, 2001). The path to this construction can be taken from the schools, in a joint action of strengthening and integration with the school community, starting from participatory actions and constructions within the school itself and expanding throughout the territory. The project proposes that these actions start from the understanding of children as political, social, participants and producers of culture, aiming at a concrete action in school spaces, considered here as spaces for study and practical experimentation. Paulo Freire's liberating pedagogy is defended as a theoretical basis to strengthen these practices of building an education for consciousness. The central problem seeks to understand: what are the methodological paths for the construction of learning about cities with children within public schools, as part of the fight against urban illiteracy? In this way, the general objective is to offer a theoretical, empirical and methodological contribution to this confrontation, building methodologies that deal with cities, architecture and urbanism and social participation with children in the school context, working with them the idea of territory and educational spaces. , taking the city of Lavras-MG as a case study. Action research is adopted as a methodology, structured from the direct participation of the researcher in interaction with other actors (children), in the production of knowledge about the interaction between city-education-childhood. In this way, the children will be collaborating participants in the research, subjects of their own knowledge. The methodology will be cyclical, alternating moments of action, reflection and action again, in an adapted way, according to previous experiments, and with the context experienced at school. In addition, as research procedures/instruments will be carried out: bibliographic study; analysis of theses and dissertations that deal with the object of research and bibliographic research in journals; participant observation in a public school in Lavras-MG - with the development of workshops in the moments of action from the survey of existing participatory tools and methodologies, adaptation and construction of others. In this way, it is intended to build with children a collective and spatial awareness from their participation and cooperation in meetings held at school. It is hoped that the research will lead to a convergence of methodologies and actions that collaborate to open effective channels for children's participation in the field of public policies, especially educational and urban ones (such as the possibility of creating a children's council), reverberating in the ways of living and transforming cities from the promotion of intersectoral policies in the search for the right to the city and that instigate the educational potential of the territories from the school. In addition, it seeks to explore the role of the architect and urban planner as an educator and the possibility of acting in this field.
